Biography

Eric van Rongen (1955) graduated in biology at Leyden University (Netherlands) in 1980. He then performed experimental radiotherapy research with the Radiobiological Institute of the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research TNO. Since 1992 he is primarily involved with non-ionizing radiation with the Health Council of the Netherlands. As Scientific Secretary of several Expert Committees he has written many advisory reports and several scientific papers on the health effects of low and high frequency electromagnetic fields. He is member of the International Advisory Committee of the WHO International EMF Project and was member of the WHO Task Groups that drafted monographs on Static Fields (2006) and on Extremely Low Frequency Fields (2007). He is currently member of the Core Group that is preparing an monograph on Radiofrequency Fields. He is member of ICNIRP since 2012, was chairman from 2016 to 2020 and is currently vice-chair. He was president/vice-president of the European Bioelectromagnetics Association (EBEA) from 2013-2017, and member of the EBEA Council from 2003-2011. He is member of the Independent Expert Group on Electromagnetic fields of the Swedish Radiation Protection Authority.

Tutorial: “Health and safety aspects of electromagnetic fields”

Abstract: Exposure to electromagnetic fields may, under certain circumstances, lead to adverse health effects. This tutorial will provide an overview of what we know of this, focussing on radiofrequency electromagnetic fields.

Keynote: “The ICNIRP exposure guidelines, focussing on 5G”

Abstract: In March 2020 the International Commission on Non-ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) published updated guidelines on limits for exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields. This presentation will discuss the development of these guidelines, their biological background, and their implications for 5G.
